Holter Monitor

Holter Monitor

A Holter Monitor is a small, portable device worn continuously for twenty-four hours to record your heart’s electrical activity during your normal daily routine. It is especially useful for detecting irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias) that may not appear during a short ECG in the clinic.

The monitor allows you to manually record symptoms—such as dizziness, palpitations, or fainting—by pressing a button on the device.

This helps your cardiologist correlate symptoms with your heart’s rhythm at the time they occur.

After the Test

Once the monitoring period is complete, return the device and diary to the clinic as instructed. Your cardiologist will review the data and send a report to your referring doctor. A follow-up appointment may be scheduled to discuss the results.

Patient Preparation

  • Clothing: Wear a loose, two-piece outfit. You will need to remove clothing from the waist up for electrode placement.
  • Skin Care: Shower prior to your appointment to have the monitor attached. Avoid applying moisturisers, powders, or deodorants to your chest on the day of the test, as these can interfere with electrode adhesion.
  • Shaving: Small areas of chest hair may be shaved to ensure proper contact between the electrodes and your skin.
  • Device Care: The monitor must not get wet. You will be shown how to temporarily remove and reattach the device for showering.
  • Daily Life: You can continue most normal activities, including light exercise, but avoid using electric blankets or magnetic underlays.
