Echocardiography

An echocardiogram is a non-invasive ultrasound scan that provides real-time images of your heart’s structure and function.

It allows your cardiologist to assess the size and shape of your heart, how well it is pumping, and the condition of your heart valves and surrounding vessels.

What to Expect During the Test

The test takes approximately 40 minutes.

You will lie on your left side on an examination bed in a dimly lit room.

A cardiac sonographer will apply a water-based gel to your chest and use a handheld probe (transducer) to capture images from various angles.

You may feel slight pressure as the probe is moved across your chest.

The test is painless and does not involve radiation.

All images are digitally recorded and reviewed by a cardiologist. A report will be sent to your referring doctor, typically within twenty-four hours.

Patient Preparation

Clothing: Wear comfortable, two-piece clothing. You will need to undress to the waist, and a gown will be provided for privacy and ease of access to the chest area.

Food & Drink: No fasting is required. You may eat and drink as normal before the test.

Medications: Continue taking your usual medications unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.
