Meet Dr Yohan Chacko

Dr Yohan Chacko is an interventional and structural cardiologist practising across Brisbane and Ipswich. He consults privately at Greenslopes and Ipswich and performs procedures at Greenslopes Private Hospital. He is also a Senior Staff Specialist Interventional Cardiologist at Princess Alexandra Hospital and Clinical Lead of the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at Ipswich Hospital.

Raised in Townsville, North Queensland, Dr Chacko completed his medical degree with honours at James Cook University. He undertook his physician and specialist cardiology training at Princess Alexandra Hospital and Nambour Hospital before commencing a fellowship in interventional cardiology at Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Dr Chacko subsequently completed a 12-month fellowship in interventional and structural cardiology at Stanford University Hospital in California. After returning to Australia, he undertook further fellowship training in transcatheter aortic valve implantation, including CT assessment and procedural planning for TAVI, at St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital.

He is a high-volume coronary interventionist and routinely uses intracoronary imaging to guide and optimise percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). He performs complex coronary intervention and stenting, as well as transcatheter aortic valve implantation.

Dr Chacko has particular interests in coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease and preventive cardiology. He has specialised training in assessing patients who experience angina despite having no significant obstructive coronary artery disease. Having trained in advanced coronary physiology at Stanford University Hospital, he performs invasive testing for coronary microvascular dysfunction and coronary vasospasm.

Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Chacko remains actively involved in cardiovascular research, education and service development. He has authored peer-reviewed publications and regularly presents his work at local, national and international scientific meetings. His research interests include coronary intervention, intracoronary imaging, coronary physiology and the delivery of cardiac catheterisation services

Dr Chacko is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland and is actively involved in teaching medical students, junior doctors and cardiology trainees.
